Biography
Alina Frieske (b. 1994, Germany) works at the intersection of photography and painting. Through digital collage, she explores the multiplicity and accessibility of visual information onlne, studying the relationship between the private and public self. Fragments of images extracted from social media platforms are reconstructed into entirely new compositions, serving as both palette and brushstrokes.
In the era of social media, individuals exist both physically and in the virtual environment of the Internet, where self-image is constantly exposed, copied and manipulated. Frieske's practice reflects on the modern obsession with visibility on social media, where anonymous strangers compete for attention, becoming noticeable only through their body language as they rise and fall through the frame like quicksand. Details, such as hands gripping bags or fingers pressing camera shutters, are distilled to their essence, creating a complex and multilayered assembly of fragmented parts.
Alina Frieske's works are held in the collections of Photo Elysée in Lausanne, Switzerland and Villa Noailles in Hyères, France. She received the ING Talent Award in 2021 and the Stiftungspreis Alison and Peter Klein Stiftung in 2023.
