We are delighted to welcome the artist Ekene Emeka-Maduka for a residency from 6 May to 22 June 2026!
Born in 1996, Ekene Emeka-Maduka is a Nigerian artist based in Winnipeg, Canada. Her constantly evolving interdisciplinary practice encompasses painting, sculpture, film and community-based work. All these manifestations of her practice stem from emotional and psychological states linked to the fragmentation of identity, reflecting migratory experiences such as her own. Although Emeka-Maduka’s work stems from a blend of her own fragmentary memories, personal events or experiences such as grief, these are always linked to historical, cultural and social contexts broader than the self.
Her work has been exhibited and screened both locally and internationally. In 2023, she was one of five artists selected in North America to create a public artwork as part of Plug-In ICA’s STAGES Biennial. Emeka-Maduka also participated in Self-Addressed, a landmark exhibition at Jeffrey Deitch Los Angeles, curated by the artist Kehinde Wiley. Her work is part of the permanent collection of the MACAAL museum, among others. In 2017, the collector, record producer and legendary rapper Kasseem Daoud Dean, known as Swizz Beatz, awarded her a young artist grant. The artist made her first solo international appearance at 1-54 London, where her work was selected by Christie’s auction house for an extension of the art fair.
