In Reflecting_stream, Mattania Bösiger explores the fragile territory between memory, perception, and the digital world, questioning how our recollections are shaped, altered, and sometimes entirely constructed by the images we encounter.
In an age when our experiences are increasingly mediated through screens, what remains of the distinction between what we have lived and what we have seen? How much truth must an image contain to awaken a memory? And why does nostalgia hold such a powerful place in our collective imagination, particularly in times of uncertainty?
For this exhibition, Bösiger presents a new body of paintings that navigates the continuous flow of digital information, extracting fragments of images, familiar objects, and fleeting scenes from an otherwise overwhelming stream of visual content. Removed from their original contexts, these elements become suspended in time, acquiring a new presence and inviting us to question their origins, authenticity, and emotional resonance.
Reflection plays a central role in this process, both as a visual device and as a metaphor. Environments emerge indirectly, revealed through mirrored surfaces and fragmented perspectives. What appears familiar becomes uncertain; what seems tangible may be entirely imagined.
Bösiger constructs spaces in which reality and representation overlap, reminding us that memory itself is never a faithful reproduction of the past, but an ongoing act of reconstruction.
At the heart of Reflecting_stream lies a subtle paradox: while the digital world produces images at an unprecedented speed, painting demands slowness, attention, and permanence. Through the physical act of painting, Bösiger interrupts the relentless circulation of images, transforming the ephemeral into something material and enduring.
His works invite us to consider nostalgia not simply as a longing for what has disappeared, but as a desire to reconnect with moments that may never have existed quite as we remember them. In this space between the real and the constructed, painting becomes a means of reclaiming intimacy within an increasingly intangible world.
Ultimately, Reflecting_stream is an exploration of our need to hold on to images, places, and sensations in a world that rarely stops moving. It is an invitation to slow down, to look beyond the surface, and to reflect on how we construct our own memories and how, in turn, those memories construct us.
