This work takes its title and inspiration from the "garden" imagery in Hieronymus Bosch’s The Garden of Earthly Delights.
Looking back now as an adult on the place where I grew up as a child, that small world feels just like a garden. When I see Bosch’s garden, I realize that my own childhood world was also a microcosm filled with all the complexities of human nature. For me, this "garden" is not an ordinary courtyard or playground. It holds all the joys and sorrows of humanity, as well as the distortions, darkness, evil, and even death that exist within human nature.
The figures in the painting are in a state of self-protection and defensiveness, which is a true reflection of my inner self.
The black birds in the sky hint at a sense of unease, while the kitten below symbolizes the warmth and kindness inherent in human nature. This garden is all-encompassing. Within this miniature world, I seek to find my own place.
