Echo Drift V brings several states of an image into the same field.
The five-part series developed alongside Nussbaumer’s experience of his father’s Alzheimer’s disease and continues his longstanding engagement with reconstruction. Different visual sources are combined, repeated and altered before and during the drawing process; forms remain recognisable while their scale, context and relation to one another shift.
Drawing and remembering operate here through similar procedures. Both depend on selection, omission, repetition and recombination. What returns is never identical to what preceded it, yet enough remains for recognition to persist.
The work holds this instability without resolving it: an image can remain present while becoming something else.
