Lucia Hierro (b. 1987, USA) is an American-Dominican artist who lives and works in New York. Her practice navigates the intersections of sculpture, textile art, digital media, and installation.
She earned a BFA in Painting and Drawing from the School of Art & Design at Purchase College (SUNY, New York) in 2010, followed by an MFA in Painting/Printmaking from Yale School of Art in 2013. Her work has been exhibited in major institutions worldwide and is included in esteemed collections such as the Guggenheim Museum (New York), the Museum of Fine Arts (Boston), the Pérez Art Museum (Miami), and the Bronx Museum.
Drawing inspiration from Pop Art and the parodic realism of Claes Oldenburg, Hierro interrogates consumer culture and its profound impact on identity, social structures, and economic disparities. Through her collages and soft assemblages, she incorporates familiar consumer goods—ranging from globally recognized brands like Coca-Cola to household cleaning products laden with toxic chemicals—highlighting their omnipresence in everyday life and their role in overconsumption. Her work exposes the contradictions within contemporary capitalism, where mass-produced goods symbolize both accessibility and exploitation, comfort and harm.
By elevating ordinary objects into artistic subjects, Hierro invites viewers to critically examine the ways in which branding, advertising, and material culture shape personal and collective experiences. Her compositions do not merely depict products; they question the socio-political narratives they carry, shedding light on issues of labor, environmental degradation, and the illusion of choice in a hyper-commercialized world.
Hierro has received several distinctions, including the LatinX Artist Fellowship Grant in 2022, and has participated in prestigious artist residencies such as Casa Quien (Santo Domingo), the Redbull House of Art (Detroit), and Yaddo (Saratoga Springs, NY).
Her creative process integrates imagery sourced from the internet alongside photographs taken during her visits to the Dominican Republic, forging a dialogue between personal memory and contemporary visual culture. Each element within her compositions is meticulously chosen to provoke reflection on both individual experience and collective consciousness, ultimately challenging the forces that dictate our consumption habits.
