The exhibition "Read These Leaves" by Polish-American artist Maria Kozak , on view at Zurich's Fabienne Levy Gallery until November 14 , takes its title from one of her favorite passages in Walt Whitman's "Leaves of Grass." The leaves in Whitman's poem represent the pages of a book. He encourages us to re-examine things we have taken for granted. For Kozak, the title also alludes to the reading of tea leaves – a practice based on recognizing patterns in ambiguities. In Kozak's paintings, too, figures, animals, botanical forms, and landscapes emerge from gestures and layers of paint before merging with them again. The artist enters into a dialogue with the material, and painting thus becomes both an act of reading and of creation.
