Overview

Fabienne Levy is pleased to present Gesture & Imprint, the gallery’ second solo exhibition by Swiss artist Catherine Bolle (b. 1956).

Gesture & Imprint unfolds as a dialogue between drawing and etching, two practices grounded in the hand, reflection, and emotion. Bringing together colored-pencil drawings on photographs, works on acrylic glass, and explorations on paper, the exhibition reveals a practice where gesture becomes both mark and memory.
Catherine Bolle’s work examines the subtle interplay between natural processes and human intervention. Through traces, imprints, and layered surfaces, she articulates a visual conversation between the legible and the illegible, where meaning shifts and dissolves into form. Her compositions move between typographic landscapes and graphic signs, navigating the threshold where writing becomes image.

Deeply informed by the histories of writing and printmaking, Bolle’s practice engages engraving as both language and action. From map-like structures to expansive prints, pigment and surface treatment become sites of transformation, where gesture inscribes space, and imprint becomes presence.
