Tobias Nussbaumer (born 1987 in Basel, Switzerland) holds a Bachelor of Arts in Illustration-Fiction from the Lucerne School of Art and Design and a Master of Arts from the Basel School of Design.
His practice combines drawing and site-specific installation. Constructing virtual architectures from fractured recollections, he uses algorithms to create drawings and confronts theoretical concepts with digital creation and artificial machine learning software. The digital outcomes are reworked and transformed into hand-drawn pieces in black coloured pencil and ink on paper. In exhibitions, Tobias Nussbaumer extends his drawings into the venue’s architecture, creating immersive settings that interweave memory, technology, space and time. He observes how layers of memory overlap and dissolve, both in our minds and in digital systems, revealing the fragility of reminiscence and of our systems of thought.
The artist has received several awards and grants (Kiefer Hablitzel, 2015; Cristina Spoerri Foundation, 2015; Ernst and Olga Gubler-Hablützel Foundation, 2018; Atelier Mondial & Residency Unlimited New York, 2022) and has been presenting his work in Switzerland and abroad for over 10 years.
